With Christmas coming, the prospect of buying presents rears its head (which can be great - if you enjoy shopping)...a lot of the things you buy or receive can be recycled or re-used next year.

One of the biggest Christmas things that can't be easily recycled is wrapping paper, and most councils don't recycle gift wrap.

The main reason they use to for this is usually along these lines;

"a lot of so-called wrapping 'paper' does not contain much paper at all - it's often layered with foil and plastic which cannot be recycled. Even gift wrap that is purely paper-based is of a poor quality by the time it ready to recycling, and is usually scrunched up with sticky tape, ribbons or labels still attached, all of which makes it unacceptable for recycling."

Do you very carefully unwrap presents and try to use the paper again?

Do you not wrap presents at all? (or while your at it don't give any greeting cards - a big no no for some people)

What are your eco friendly ideas for wrapping paper and any other hints and tips for having a more sustainable Christmas?

I read the discussions re street lighting LED's and was interested because that's what we do.

I believe we need to get away from our obsession with lumens/lux and look at general coverage of lighting, quality of light and the energy CO2 saved

Just wanted to let everyone know that next year's showcase is being organised for 3rd March 2010. Last year we had over 100 exhibitors and 24 speakers including dcsf, ofsted and many other national bodies. See details on www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/sss People came from all over the country to it, and it was a truly inspirational day.

SSS 2010 is set to be bigger and better as, along with school staff, governors and PTAs, school councils/eco-committees are also being invited.

Many more workshops will be happening throughout the day, and productions on the main stage.

It is a free event to attend and bookings will be taken from January on the website so do let your school councils and staff know about it so they can come along.

I noticed one of the discussions on this website was from some students that were at last year's event so it would be great to put this information out to the student forum - can anyone tell me how to do that???

How sad to hear the opinions of a few chosen people on the Jeremy Vine programe. I can understand the output by the two called in to be convinced by the expert on climate change. Anyone who has a microphone put in front of them, who even though they may have given the impression when visiting the expert earlier that they were considering the evidence, will feel duty bound to say something controversial as the programe was being sent out to millions of listeners, but the woman at the end who completely dismissed the idea of global warming and any change in the climate as rubbish, should be ashamed of herself. It's this I'm alright attitude that frustrates and saddens me. The climate is changing in parts of the world where the population is hit hardest, but to this woman, and unfortuneatly to lots of others, they don't matter. The inconvenient truth?

How do you think we could persuade more celebrities or politicians to add to the famous feet gallery. I was disappointed that Ed Miliband didn't do so. I know its a bit of an usual thing for politicians to do but would have shown a bit of solidarity.

I'd be interested to see if we could try amongst ourselve to contact celebrities or kids tv presenters to add to the gallery. Well done to Emma Thompson for baring her sole. It would be great for raising the profile and letting kids know about the site.

Hi, yup, 'new arrival', to this site. Just trying to figure it all out, whats with the odd surfacing panicking aware nonsense in the black box by everyones names?! I applied to the site as I felt compelled to answer a question I saw on the website.

Erm, I might as well start with a sensible post, what do you guys make of this car scrappage scheme? Utter nonsense right? As an engineer I can't help but think that removing all these cars is the least green move the government could have made.

Plasma TV's?

I went to my parents home this Christmas; they've just bought a new 37" plasma HD TV.

I was initially impressed good picture, and even energy saving options built in. But even with these settings used the TV kicks out an almost astonishing amount of heat.

So I had a read about it online (one of the stories here: TreeHugger) and basically plasmas seem to be the least energy efficient TV you can get.

Anyone else found this with plasma TVs? I will make sure I stick with LCD myself.
